Discord frequently shows up as a “new application” in my glasswire install. I’ve got over 30 instances of discord allowed but it seems like every coupleupdates that it will show back up. I feel like this is a bug but it could be Discord’s programming.
It’s not a bug as such with either Glasswire or Discord, Everytime a vendor releases a new version of their product Glasswire detects the change in version number and adds it to the new applications list. The older versions will eventually drop off the list or you can manually remove the old entries.
Not a bug, just lazy programming by the GlassWire team. There are several apps which behave like this and in my experience they never drop off the list automatically. Eventually they slow down the processing of firewall actions. Unfortunately, the manual housekeeping tools are rather poor. You can either delete all inactive apps, which will likely cause collateral damage, or inspect each app listing to try to work out those which have now been superseded and can be deleted.
I don’t understand why they can’t add checkbox to the firewall connect prompt which will delete entries for previous versions of the same executable.
Your probably right on that first count. I run my instance in “Ask to Connect” mode so for the most part I just go to my Inactive Apps and delete all of them periodically to clean up the mess. Worse case is I delete one that is still used and it reprompts me on next network access.
For me the more annoying ones are system services like the Antimalware Service Executable which you simply cannot delete even manually from the Glasswire Interface.
Of course I could go into the Windows Advanced Firewall and delete the relevant Glasswire created entries from there, but why should we have to do this, especially for system services where you would not be running two versions of them at the same time on your system (unlike some apps where in rare instances you may run two versions because of some unique use cases).
It would be good to have a checkbox as you suggest or a checkbox that asks if you wish to keep the older entry else they are automatically removed. It should be a simple matching exercise.
This can cause problems as the GlassWire database is then out of sync with the firewall entries. GlassWire will typically just recreate the missing firewall entries, but other weirdness can happen.
Agree Glasswire typically just recreates all the entries.
I hadn’t spotted that some service rules were protected.
Deleting all Inactive Apps is a PITA as it includes anything you haven’t used recently and many of the updater processes, including Windows Update.
I’m convinced that GlassWire don’t actually run their software on their own systems. If they did these things would have been fixed.
Hello everyone,
Windows Firewall identifies applications by their full file path. As a result, applications that include the version number in their path may create duplicate entries in the Windows Firewall rules table. Since GlassWire relies on Windows Firewall and Discord includes its version number in its path, multiple entries for Discord are shown in GlassWire.
We recognize the benefit of being able to remove outdated entries, and we’re actively considering this feature for future versions of GlassWire.
In the meantime, we kindly ask that discussions remain constructive and respectful.
Feel free to share your feedback and suggestions, while appreciating the work of others.
Andrea
If this is feature is ever implemented please don’t remove the ability for Glasswire
“Log Analysis”
To be keep a log, and notify of software number version changes.
Thank you…
A great and relatively easy start would be if the GlassWire Protect screen included a column for the application version and sorted the entries for each application by the version. That would make manual removal of outdated entries much less painful. This would be a quick win ahead of a more automated approach to purging old duplicate entries.
Agreed, another vote here for sorting by app and the ability to mass select/delete rules.
That’s something interesting @ittroll, we note it down. Thanks!
Please do. I did suggest the same back in December.
