When running the installer for the latest build, Bitdefender Total AV reports malware detected.
When scanning the executable, it reports nothing, but if I run it, it detects the malware in the image.
Is this a false positive?

Have you scanned the programme using VirusTotal ?
If BD is the only antivirus programme to detect the programme as malware, it is likely to be a false positive.
Thanks for reporting this. Yes, this is a false positive. I’ll reach out to Bitdefender to report this and get this cleared on their end. Can you confirm the product you’re using that flagged this? This is the list it allows me to choose from when submitting a false positive for analysis.
Uninstall BitDefender and save your money. Microsoft Defender is all you need.
I’m running Bitdefender Total Security. The list you see looks like the corporate products.
If you want to stick with MS as your main AV I would consider taking a look at HardConfigurator or Windows Hybrid Hardening Light (easier to understand than Hard Configurator) both from AndyFul. Both are offered for free. They tweak and improve MS Defender quite nicely. The dev has his own threads about his products on malwaretips.
That beeing said having a backup before trying any new AV product is always a good idea.
@hgfh I would always report a found malware directly to the AV vendor if I think if it’s a false positive. Most times a real human malware analyst will take a look at it and tells you if it was a fp or not.
I’ve reached out to Bitdefender to report the detection and asked them to review it as a false positive. I’ll share any updates here if I hear back from them.
Quick update - Bitdefender got back to us and confirmed this was a false positive. Their Malware Research Team reviewed the installer and indicated that the detection will be removed in an upcoming update.
Thanks again for reporting!
I just installed the latest version of Glasswire with Bitdefender Anti-Virus Plus and had no problems at all.
