Router login with Edge

Just installed Glasswire Premium. I can’t logon my ASUS router in MS Edge now. I CAN.with Brave. And I can do most everything else in Edge.

I have tried the router IP, router.asus.com, anything else I can think of.

I have turned the firewall in Glasswire OFF, and ON, and OFF many times. I have allowed every Edge thing I can find in Glasswire.

Any ideas? I’ve emailed Glasswire, but reading around, it seems they might be almost gone. Woe is me, I guess. If I could I’d go back to yesterday and still have my $90.

Hi @thosj1 - Have you tried emailing our support team at help@glasswire.com?

Can you login when you turn the firewall off?
If you still can’t, then it is unlikely to be GlassWire.
Perhaps try Edge with an InPrivate tab.

Yes, crickets so far.

As stated in the original post, YES, I’ve tried with the firewall turned off. It seems way to coincidental that Edge started this MINUTES after installing Glasswire. Does anyone know if I completely uninstall Glasswire if this behavior will stop?

No, I cannot log on to my router in an InPrivate tab. I also can’t logon if I EXIT Glasswire. Might try uninstalling it next, but hey, my $90 it watching…..

When you say you cannot login. Is it that Edge cannot find the web admin page (This site can’t be reached), or is failing to login once you reach that page.

Edge can be very picky about self-signed certificates. So HTTPS might get blocked but HTTP would be OK. However, that wouldn’t be linked to the install of GlassWire.

As GlassWare said, worth double checking your router IP by using ipconfig to show the Default Gateway. However, the fact that it is working in Brave would imply no networking/routing issues. Turning off the GlassWire firewall should mean that no apps on your machine are being blocked by GlassWire.

I KNOW the gateway IP of my router. Again, as I said in the first post, I’ve tried with the gateway IP and router.asus.com. Nothing works.

Typing the IP address in the address page, the admin page briefly flashes and it goes to a page that says Hmmm… can’t reach this page

It looks like the webpage at http://router.asus.com/ might be having issues, or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED

The thing here is, I’ve been logging on to this router for years this same way, all the other computers, 6 of ‘em, in my home logon with Edge just fine, and THIS one, moments after installing Glasswire, WON’T!!! So……….believing in coincidence or not……..does it not point to Glasswire???

If other computers are still working fine, then I would seem that GlassWire is smoking gun.

With the firewall disabled in GlassWire it should only be operating in monitoring mode, but perhaps that is conflicting in some way. Short of uninstalling GlassWire, you could try closing the desktop app and stopping the GlassWire Control Service in Services.

It is strange that only Edge is affected though. Is Brave operating with a VPN, or do you have any other browsers installed on this machine you can test with?

The only other thing I can think of is a rogue firewall rule in Windows Firewall which is not being managed by GlassWire. You could go to Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security and review any rules which are being applied to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe

Any rules which begin {GlassWire are managed by GlassWire. In my case you can see there is a rule added by GlassWire, set to Allow, but also a standard rule added when Edge is installed.

msedge

No VPN anywhere, ever. I have only Brave as a second browser and Brave works fine logging on to my router. I guess I could install Firefox and see what that does, and/or Chrome.

I shut down the GlassWire Control Service, still can’t get to the router in Edge.

Looking into Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security items, but this might be beyond me to understand!! I’ll give it a look.

I have NOT, as of yet, uninstalled Glasswire, mostly because I’m apprehensive Glasswire changed something else somewhere and uninstalling won’t actually fix it.

Installing another browser might be your easiest next step/test.
If that works OK then it would indicate that the problem is with Edge rather than GlassWire. I thought it might be the self-signed certificate from the router, but that would give you a different error.
So firewall rules would be the next thing to check. When you install/re-install GlassWire it gives you the option to perform a full reset to default settings, which might be the easiest option for you. That is also likely what GlassWIre Support would suggest.

I uninstalled Glasswire, didn’t get the offer to perform a full reset. I just used add/remove programs not any fancy uninstaller. Edge still won’t logon to my router. So………did Glasswire change something in my Edge settings or what?

I reset Edge to default settings and I can now log on to my router. If I’m ready for the hassle, I’ll make a backup now, reboot, try installing Glasswire anew. If it does it again, I guess I’m done, a $90 lesson learned.

The option for a full firewall reset is during install/re-install. It nukes all existing firewall settings so you are starting from default baseline.

But it is sounding more like an issue with Edge’s browser state.

I guess I’m leaning toward Edge’s browser state, too, but not being a big coincidence believer, I have a hard time reckoning Edges state was not changed by the Glasswire install as that’s the exact instant the browser state changed!!

It is feasible it was blocked by GlassWire (prior to being allowed) part way through doing something and that has corrupted it’s state.

So…….Installed Glasswire on a new Windows install on another computer that’s never seen Glasswire, Edge logged on my router. Activated Glasswire Premium, Edge logged on my router, activated the Glasswire firewall, Edge logged on my router. Go figger, I guess. I’m going to brave installing on the original computer, now that I reset Edge, and see what happens, with a good backup first, of course!!

One thing worth checking is whether Edge is using enhanced security mode or strict tracking prevention. Those settings can block access to local IP addresses like router admin pages while other browsers continue working normally.

For anyone following, I got it working on the original PC AFTER resetting Edge and reinstalling and choosing the reset the firewall settings. Glasswire email support did finally reply, telling me to uninstall and install checking the reset options, so maybe that would have done it if I’d done that first.
