V3.7.880 blocking tons by itself

Context : reinstalled and tested on 2 devices. “Ask To Connect” mode

Same behaviour noticed here for both:

  • the silent blocked apps without popup (for inbound and outbound)
  • glasswire startup time equal automatic app blocked during the time frame

Fully reinstalled = NOK

Updated glasswire on another device = NOK

@Huda_GlassWire For now glasswire is UNUSABLE, i have to keep glasswire window open at all time to unblock some apps every few minutes or hours depending on the auto update processes (microsoft apps especially)

Please provide an official link to version 3.5.821 and give us some news about your internal investigations for either a hotfix or a feature rollback.

Cheers

Yup, it was driving me crazy! Now I have downloaded the 3.5.821 version and it’s all stable. I will wait till a patch/update comes.

@squalleon It’s sad that they have no older downloads listed.
But if you like riddles:
https://download.glasswire.com/f/glasswire-setup-3.7.880-full.exe” (without the “ at the front and end) is the link for 3.7.880 guess what happens when you change only the numbers to 3.5.821

It worked for me (don’t want to post a full link that they didn’t list).

The lack of updates or solutions for this issue by the company is deeply disturbing. I’m also a long time user of this software! Fortunately I’m running 3.5.821 and am making sure the setting for auto-update remains turned off.

I’ve been using Glasswire for like 5 years now

I just made a clean install of windows 11 pro + last official release of glasswire, and I have experienced the same issue: when glasswire firewall is ON and set to “ask to connect”, tray notifications on the right side of the windows bar never show up, and glasswire just blocks everything

the list of apps is just populated with red “block” on both in and out connections

I uninstalled it and clean-installed the previous version kindly indicated here, and everything started working fine again

for the record, this morning I still was on windows 10 with the very last release of glasswire, and everything was fine

ohh, a notification just appeared showing glasswire was going to upgrade in 30 seconds… hopefully there’s a way to not allow it to install… no there isn’t

but I just witnessed that with the update the problem does not happen: it looks like being an issue related to a clean install of the very last glasswire version: if you install the old one and update it to the latest one, everything should work fine (or at least it did in my case)

good luck!

Under settings, general, uncheck allow auto updates. I will not chance installing 3.7.880! I was able to choose skip that version.

Hi,

Allowing auto-blocked apps (without asking!) is going to become a full time job, as you have to block EVERY new versions of the same app (while the older versions remain visible in the list… WHY?)

And everytime, you have to

  1. click on the app
  2. click on the fire button “All blocked”
  3. click on “Authorize all connections

If I remember well, in previous versions, we had a little fire icon on the left of each lines, allowing to do all that in one single click… how convenient!

And you also often have twice the same items, same version version… just to make the list longer and more work for the user ?

Some times same version, sometimes it’s a new version… why do I care anyway, there are so manythings to block now that I unblock everythin almost without looking at what it is. I HAVE NO TIME FOR THIS DUMB ACTIVITY

Please add a funcionnality where it can automaticaly recognize a new version of an app for which we already did the job of allowing/blocking !

And wouldn’t it be wise to have an option to “allow all application from this specific editor” ?

It would allow us to allow by default every apps from Microsoft (if signed)

And if I remember well, in previous versions, we had a column for something like “community mark” displaying the percentage of people from the Glaswire community who have blocked the app. It was also quite useful to have !

And if I remember well, in previous versions, there was also a column with a warning icon :warning: for unsigned apps, it was useful also. Now you have to click on the app to see it:

So… what happen Glasswire team ? Are you depreciating your app on purpose ?

I asked years ago for the ability to automatically allow apps signed by a specific publisher.

I would think it would also be possible - somehow - for GlassWire to determine a new version of Google Drive is - in fact - just a newer version of a program I already approved and automatically approve the new version. I get really tired of discovering my files are not syncing and realizing a new version of Google Drive is being blocked.

All very frustrating.

For years I have recommended GlassWire at security presentations I give (having given over 100). I still recommend it, but with a caveat that it is likely to drive you a little crazy. I know of several people who used GlassWire based on my recommendation who got rid of it because it was causing them more grief than good.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been in ongoing discussions with our GlassWire development team to better understand the experiences many of you have shared regarding the firewall. Based on your feedback, I’ve created a new forum post that explains in detail how the firewall currently works in GlassWire, especially in Ask to Connect mode.

There have been several usability updates that affect how this feature behaves, and I wanted to make sure you have all the information in one clear place. Please take a moment to review the post, and let me know if what you’re seeing on your system doesn’t align with the behavior described there.

We’re listening and truly value your input. While we’re a small team, we’re committed to ensuring that GlassWire stays intuitive, reliable, and consistent. Your feedback plays a big role in helping us improve, so please keep sharing your thoughts and ideas on how we can make GlassWire even better.

Thank you for your patience and continued support,

The GlassWire Team

Thanks for (IMNSHO) this quite tardy response. This thread has been going on for over 3 weeks with a lot of frustrated users chiming in and no useful responses from GlassWire until now. I have responded to your new thread in “GlassWire General”. But for the benefit of anyone who is just following the thread I started here, following is how I responded.

Thanks for the long-overdue post explaining how things work in “Ask to connect”. However, I do have a few comments:

I see quite frequently programs like Microsoft Quick Assist fail due to “Microsoft Edge Webview2” being blocked. IF I ever see a GlassWire prompt asking me if I want it to be allowed, I FOR SURE allow it - I know just how disruptive it is to have this blocked. Microsoft Quick Assist - when it fails - will never tell you that it is failing because Microsoft Edge Webview2 can’t access the Internet. I am 100% sure there are times when I do not get a GlassWire prompt asking me if I want to allow Microsoft Edge Webview2. When I use Quick Assist and it fails, I now know to just go to GlassWire Protect and unblock the inevitably blocked Microsoft Edge Webview2 and restart Quick Assist,

Likewise, when I discover that Google Drive is not syncing, I go to GlassWire Protect and unblock it. This is a more insidious problem because I am much less likely to realize that Google Drive is just silently failing to sync. I swear at GlassWire when I go to another computer, expecting my Google Drive files to have been synced from changes I made recently on my main computer only to find the files never got synced from my main computer to Google’s cloud. I swear very loudly when I am not near to my main computer and can’t fix the problem by unblocking Google Drive there. Such as when I am giving a presentation Protecting your PC to a group of people at a branch of the Ottawa Public Library (which I have given over 100 times), in which—ironically—I mention how people can use GlassWire as one of the layers to protect themselves.

An issue I see with the current behaviour is (as explained by you) is that there is no way I can tell from looking at the list of blocked apps in GlassWire Protect - which of them are blocked by default and will (I can only hope) pop up and ask me if I want to allow them when they first access the netwoark and which of them are blocked because I got a popup and told GlassWire I didn’t want the program to access the network.

I would much prefer if programs didn’t show up on the list until I explicitly allow them or deny them. Any program not on the list should not appear on the list until they try to access the network! I really don’t care if program XYZ doesn’t show up IF it hasn’t tried to access the network. And when it does try to access the network, it should show up as “Allowed” if I answered the GlassWire popu to say I wanted it allowed. It should show up as “Blocked” If I answered the GlassWire prompt saying I wanted it blocked. If I don’t answer the prompt, it should be blocked but not show up on the list. The next time it tries to access the network, I should get the GlassWire prompt.

I think the only mode that makes sense for GlassWire - from a true protection point-of-view - is “Ask to connect”. I am not interested in any other mode as that is the only mode that will truly protect me should I get a rogue program on my computer.

I have been living with this craziness in 880, but it really is driving me nuts. I am seriously close to going back to an earlier version and sticking with that until it GlassWire no longer works. At which point, I will just uninstall GlassWire and be done with it.

It blocks EVERYTHING. Even glasswire.com. Fix it!

This issue is MONTHS old and you have done NOTHING to fix the problem. What a f*cking POS company.

Instead of making excuses and “consulting with developers” this version should be canceled and pulled and consider replacing the developers who created this nightmare. I’ve used Glasswire for years and recommended it to many others. Fortunately I reverted to 3.5.821. When my subscription is up I certainly will be looking for alternatives.

I completely understand how frustrating this must feel, and I’m really sorry for the trouble you’re experiencing.

I want you to know that we are actively looking into this issue with our development team. I’m hearing of a few different issues with Ask to Connect mode, so I’d like to gather a few quick details to help us pinpoint exactly what’s happening in your case, if you don’t mind.

You mentioned that you are being blocked from using Chrome, Firefox, Edge, (at the minimum). Assuming you’re using Ask to Connect mode, are you seeing all of these apps blocked by default in your list? Was this automatically after upgrade to 3.7? Have you tried manually changing their rule to Allow or clearing them from the list to see if it gives you a pop-up to allow/block?

My cure: I removed Glaswire and enabled the firewall in my BitDefender security app. Their UI is wanting, but technically, it works just fine. I could no longer use my PC with this latest version of Glasswire.

I use the free version of GW and therefore not the GW FW.

If the FW does not allow wildcard rules, each new version of msedgewebview2.exe (approximately 1 per week) will be considered a new program.

I’m running the Pro version of GlassWire and recently switched from “Ask to Connect” to “Click to Block” mode. Unfortunately, I’m still facing the same issue: apps are being silently blocked without any prompt.

To get them working again, I have to open GlassWire manually and allow each app one by one — and since there’s no multi-select option, this becomes really time-consuming.

At the moment, I’ve had to disable GlassWire completely because it’s just not functioning as expected, which is really disappointing given how much I rely on it.

Could the team please share an estimate on when a fix might be available? Or is there a known workaround for this issue? Also, is it that you’re unable to reproduce the problem on your end?

Thanks in advance for any updates — this feature is great when it works, but right now it’s breaking my workflow.
