@Huda_GlassWire Please can you confirm if fixing this longstanding recurring issue is a higher priority than adding new features.
Hi @Tarun, @ittroll, @Geri123, @GlassWare. Thanks for following up and for taking the time to share your thoughts.
I want to start by clearing up one thing. The hardware resource usage feature was already underway before these firewall issues came up. We finished that work alongside the firewall fixes, so I wanted to mention it here so no one is surprised when they see this feature appear while we are still working through stability issues. Looking ahead, we would like to build more useful tools in this area, but that will come later and will be shaped by your feedback once the core product is in a solid, stable place.
To simplify the firewall app list, we are removing apps that have never made a network connection. We are doing this instead of adding a toggle or more options, since including those apps caused confusion about what was actually allowed or blocked. In some cases, apps appeared blocked even though the user never explicitly blocked them, simply because they never connected to the network. This may also have contributed to reports of apps being blocked on their own, which is why we want this change in place before releasing an update so we can clearly see whether the issue has been resolved.
To give you a clearer picture of where our focus is right now, here is the current plan and order of work:
-
Fix apps being blocked unexpectedly
Some apps were being blocked without you choosing to block them. We found a bug that could cause this and fixed it.
Status: Completed -
Simplify the firewall app list
Remove apps that have never used the network so the list only shows what you have explicitly allowed or blocked.
Status: In progress, almost done -
Update the UI to Qt6
Update the app to use a newer, supported framework to help reduce crashes and improve overall stability. This is important to improve reliability before moving forward
Status: Up next -
Fix firewall rules not carrying over to new app versions
Make sure your firewall rules stay in place when an app updates to a new version.
Status: Up next -
Improve firewall management
Make it easier to manage firewall rules with tools such as filtering, bulk actions and easy rule clearing.
Status: Planned
Right now, our main goal is stability. We do not want to add new features until the product is in a good, reliable state.
As many of you have recommended, once we have an update ready for testing, I will create a separate post here with a link to the installer so anyone who wants to try it can do so. Once we have confirmation that the issues are resolved, we can then consider making it generally available and rolling it out more broadly.
I also love the suggestion of running a survey for future features! That is something I would be happy to do once we are through this stabilization work, so future improvements are guided by what you actually want.
I know this has been frustrating, and I understand why. My goal is to work with you all to turn this around and get GlassWire back to a place where it feels dependable again. Thank you for sticking with us and for continuing to share thoughtful, constructive feedback.
I will keep posting updates as things move forward.
Thanks,
Huda
Hey @Tarun, I wanted to respond directly to the crash behavior you described.
We still haven’t been able to reliably reproduce the crashes internally, including on the older versions you mentioned. You said you think you may see how the issue is triggered, and that would be incredibly helpful for us. If you’re open to it, any details you can share about what’s happening leading up to the crash would go a long way. Things like what you’re doing at the time, whether it seems tied to the UI or the background service, or any patterns you’ve noticed across versions are all useful.
Thanks again for being so direct and for taking the time to dig into this. I’d really like to work with you to get to the bottom of it.
Thanks,
Huda
Agree. My development experience calls it a maintenance release? I am perplexed at their seeming lack of development release plans, or lack of one. I am being a bit harsh, but I ran out of patience months ago and resorted to using my Bitdefender firewall. ![]()
I’ve been using V3.5.821 with no crashes since I had to roll back from the latest version. I’m looking forward to you fixing the issues that you outlined in your latest postings. I’ve used Glasswire for years and hope to continue to do so. Wishing you success in your efforts!
One thing I forgot to mention is that when we move the UI to Qt6, we’ll also be migrating GlassWire to x64. It’s not something most users will notice day to day, but it’s an important under the hood change that should help with stability and set us up better for future improvements.
The 64bit would be good to have.
This should be noted…
I would say your best uninstalling the current 32bit version before installing the new 64bit version.
A fresh start…
No updates since aug 2025? Am I reading that correctly? I really enjoyed GW before the lastest “update” broke everything.
To the people who have moved on, what are you using now?
ask to connect = yes
it blocks both incoming and outgoing without my permission = yes
I bet cursor or claude code can fix it. (grin)
@KellyC Totally hear you. We’re almost done with the fixes now, and an update should be ready soon. When it’s available, we’d really appreciate help testing it to make sure everything behaves as expected.
Thanks for hanging in there.
On the cusp of it being one month since the post. Curious where that beta version is.
Yes, and if it is the 64bit version that they mentioned, it will be a new install PATH and wont override the 32bit version which is in Program Files (x86)
For me i wont be testing it on a production box, more like a VM for a while…
So still no hotfix after almost 6 months.
But the UI framework will be upgraded and the app architecture will be changed. What could possibly go wrong…
The test build will be ready to share with you all early next week!
Just to clarify, this upcoming version will not be the 64-bit build yet. That will follow shortly after. We want to make sure the firewall behavior is corrected first before introducing a new architecture or UI changes.
The build you’ll be testing next week is focused specifically on stabilizing the firewall. The main changes include:
-
Removing apps with no network activity from the firewall list
-
Fixing cases where Ask to Connect mode did not always trigger alerts properly
-
Addressing a few scenarios that were causing crashes
There are some additional bug fixes as well, but those are the primary highlights.
Thank you for continuing to stick with us while we get this right.
This app is completely broken for me. Started EA app, said allow to all, no dice, so hunted down what was blocked in the list, was IGproxy32, deleted the rule, put glasswire in click to block mode, relaunched EA app, everything worked, I allowed glasswire to auto populate the needed rules, downloaded a game etc, closed EA app, put back to ask to connect mode, can’t get in, EA just says there is no connection, NOTHING is blocked in glasswire rules list, and NO ask to connect pop up. This app used to be amazing when I used pro for a year from late 2021 to 2022, and now all I want is a refund. Are you serious? So I launched epic games, said yes to everything, and it created two BLOCK rules I was NOT asked permission for. I really really wanted to get away from Avira, but their ask to connect in the firewall is so far ahead, and just asks you once for the main app, that it’s not even close. This thing is creating all these crazy block rules without intervention, on my main games apps! Seriously?
And yes before you ask, I long uninstalled Avira and did a windows firewall reset so I could just use Malwarebytes as my AV (no firewall) and Glasswire as my firewall and it’s unbelievably bad. Even every time I try to reply here I get a pop up completely obscuring the text reply box and I have to close THAT so I can type and see it. Are you thinking of the user experience at all anymore? Gemini told me that you were acquired by some big corporation, now it’s making sense. So sad. So sad.
WOW, more pop ups as I was trying to edit the spelling of the post! Using glasswire app and the forums is actually making me angry; I do not need this.
So because I am honest, I reset all networking, uninstalled GW, and when reinststalling I chose clean install, legacy driver and reset windows firewall, and all seems fine right now. I have sent a follow up email to request a pause on refund as I try to understand what I am losing with the legacy driver, if anything, but maybe it was all the rules I had over the years with avira (as that uses windows firewall as well), I don’t know, but it seems fixed
The new version which reworks firewall behaviour should be available from next week. Might be best to see how that turns out before making your final decision. It has been in the works for 6 months so may have significant changes.
Test build is now available! Take a look at our latest post outlining this -
Two anti-malware engines at VirusTotal detect this as malware. I think I will wait a couple of days to see if more anti-malware engines start calling it malware.
